Chapter 19: The Drama Of Overwhelm
This chapter is all about being overcome with the feeling of being overwhelmed, and that overwhelming feelings cause SO MUCH DRAMA in our lives. It covers how we need to step back away from the drama that stress or overwhelming feelings cause, step back into reality, and live a life with little to no overwhelm.
Here are my favorite quotes from the chapter:
“We are so unbelievably blessed to have all the things we have, all the opportunities and ideas and people and tasks and interests and experiences and responsibilities-choosing to freak out about it all, rather than enjoying the living of our lives, is like throwing pearls before swine” (157).
We’re lucky to have everything that we do, and have each and every experience that we encounter. We’re blessed to have thoughts, people that care about us, things to do, hobbies we partake in, etc. If you panic about something that doesn’t go how you planned rather than learning from the experience, you’re not getting everything out of life (and the experience) that you could be.
“You can create anything you desire, but you have to truly want it” (158).
If you think it and want it badly enough, you can get there.
“Decide that you live an awesome, relaxed life full of interesting projects that you love doing and communicate that to the world and yourself” (161).
For some context: Jen is talking about how when we converse with someone else and they ask us how we’re doing, we often times say: “Good, but busy!” I’m SO guilty of this. I’m 99.9% sure everyone is. I’m going to work on this, but instead of saying you’re busy, tell people something interesting that happened at work that day. This will train your brain to BELIEVE that you live an awesome life (because you do).
“Do what you can do in joy, instead of trying to do it all in misery” (163).
Make sure you’re living your life in a happy mindset, instead of stressing and overwhelming yourself with everything you have to do and making yourself miserable.
“Help is all around us, sometimes receiving it is simply a matter of looking at it differently, or not giving up so easily” (163).
Maybe you’re someone with a lot of pride and view asking for help as looking weak. I totally get it, I’ve been known to be that way before. But if you really need help, just ASK someone. Because 9 out of 10 times you’ll receive help in some way.
Chapter 20: Fear Is For Suckers
This chapter title says it all: fear controls the lives of people who let it. So DON’T BE one of THOSE people! You’re SO MUCH STRONGER than your fears.
Here are my selected quotes from the chapter:
“It’s so simple; fear will always be there, poised and read to wreak havoc, but we can choose whether we’re going to engage with it or turn on the lights, drown it out and crawl past it” (168).
We all will experience fear, it’s not like we can magically make it disappear. However, you CAN choose how you react to your fears. You can decide to let fear control you, or you can block out your fear and go for whatever it is you’re seeking. YOU DECIDE.
“On the other side of your fear is your freedom” (171).
What a simple (but profound) thought that is SO TRUE.
“Face your fears with the truth, that they are all in your mind, and they will lose their power over you” (173).
Earlier in the chapter, Jen was saying that fear is futuristic. She’s saying that our fears haven’t happened yet; we just create them in our heads even though they don’t exist. So, face your fears with what you know (the present and truth), know that you’re just thinking your fears and they AREN’T true, and they won’t have a strong hold over you.
“Fear is all about how you choose to look at things, so by changing your perspective on it you can let the fear of NOT doing the things you’re scared of fuel your quest to greatness” (173).
Fear is all about PERSPECTIVE, which Jen talks about QUITE A BIT in her book. Change your perspective on what you’re scared to do, let it out to try, and GET AFTER LIFE.
I hope you enjoyed these selected quotes and that you’ll read YAB on your happy and healthy adventure. 🙂 ❤
