Rising Strong: Chapter 1

Chapter 1 of Rising Strong by Brene Brown is entitled “The Physics of Vulnerability.” The chapter is an exploration of vulnerability, how to be vulnerable and why it’s important to practice it. It’s tough for many of us to be vulnerable because it’s uncomfortable and has A LOT of unknowns, but it’s important because it allows for some great personal development.

*Note: As I mentioned in my first post about this book, there will be no page numbers included with the quotes since my version of the book is an ebook and has location numbers, which are useless unless you also have the ebook.

Here are my selected quotes from the chapter:

“Vulnerability is not winning or losing; it’s having the courage to show up and be seen when we have no control over the outcome.”

This is SUCH a scary thought for everyone; no one likes not knowing what’s going to happen. But we have to be vulnerable and take risks without knowing what’s going to happen because otherwise we aren’t living life.

“One more thing (successful people/badasses) have in common is that they don’t try to avoid emotions-they are feeling machines who think and engage with their own emotions and the emotions of people they love, parent, and lead.”

This is difficult for a lot of people too (me included!). We have to tap into our emotions and others emotions to live the best version of our life we can. We have to acknowledge and connect with our feelings, and then think and engage with those feelings to be of the most help to ourselves and to others.

“Spirituality is recognizing and celebrating that we are all inextricably connected to one another by a power greater than all of us, and that our connection to that power and to one another is grounded in love and belonging. Practicing spirituality brings a sense of perspective, meaning, and purpose to our lives.”

This is why being a Christian and practicing Catholicism has been so great for me (and for many). It allows us to believe in a greater being and to spread love to others. It allows for us to accept that our life is in God’s plan and He is the only one that knows our true path in life. Believing in God allows for a person to gain perspective of their own life and the lives of others, the meaning to each life on this Earth, and to understand what each person’s purpose on Earth is.
